This is an external ultrasound treatment for non-invasive breakdown of fat. Its clinical application is in body contouring.

External ultrasounds(applied on the skin surface) have been used to soften the fat and ease the surgeon's effort during liposuction. Several papers have claimed that external ultrasound reduced post operative swelling and improved skin tightening after liposuction although some may argue that it is controversial.

Internal Ultrasound(applied under the skin through tiny skin incisions) is also used to emulsify fat prior to liposuction. The Vaser system is an improved version of UAL(ultrasound assisted liposuction).

Several models of external ultrasounds for non-invasive body contouring have emerged in the market. The Ultrashape is the first commercially available external ultrasound for body contouring. It has undergone clinical trials in Europe and the US and hopes to get FDA approval soon. The Liposonix is another external ultrasound that uses high intensity focussed ultrasound to break fat down from the surface of the skin. It has conducted multiple clinical trials in Mexico and hopes to get FDA approval for its clinical use.

The Novashape is an external ultrasound for non-invasive body contouring. It is developed by Ultramed in Switzerland and is CE marked(European approval for medical use).

It achieves a reduction in fat volume by using variable resonance ultrasound energy to cause localized fat cell disruption in a controlled manner.

NovaShape technology by variable resonance ultrasound energy works on several mechanism of action:
Use of acoustic ultrasound waves to disrupt fat cells by cavitation method
Using thermal energy to heat up and destroy fat

After the causing fat cell disruption, the triglycerides are taken up by the body's macrophages and remove by the lymphatic system.
